Charcoal pastes, LED kits from Instagram reels, oil pulling videos, DIY lemon-and-baking-soda scrubs, activated carbon powders, banana peel rubs — the internet is a jungle of whitening 'hacks', most of which don't work and some of which permanently damage your enamel. Meanwhile, dentist-supervised whitening has become genuinely affordable, painless, and predictable. This guide from Kolkata Smiles in Dum Dum, Kolkata cuts through the noise so you can invest in a whiter smile safely — and keep it white for years.
Extrinsic stains sit on the enamel surface. Common Indian culprits are chai, coffee, red wine, tobacco, paan and gutka, and highly pigmented curries and sauces. These respond well to cleaning and whitening.
Intrinsic stains sit inside the tooth. Causes include normal ageing (dentine yellows as we get older), childhood tetracycline use, dental trauma that caused internal bleeding, and dental fluorosis from very high-fluoride water. These respond less predictably to whitening and sometimes need veneers.
Identifying which type you have is step one — and it needs a dentist's eye, not a filter on a selfie.
The gold standard for fast, dramatic results. A dentist isolates the gums with a protective barrier and applies a medical-grade hydrogen peroxide gel, often activated by a specialised LED or laser light. In 60–90 minutes, teeth typically become 4–8 shades lighter, with results lasting 1–3 years depending on diet and habits.
It is safe, controlled and enamel-friendly because gums are physically shielded, gel concentration is calibrated, and any early sensitivity is treated immediately with desensitising gel. You walk out the same day with a visibly brighter smile — perfect before weddings, interviews or reunions.
We take digital impressions and fabricate thin, comfortable, custom-fit trays. At home you place a small amount of professional-strength gel in the trays and wear them 30–60 minutes daily for 10–14 days.
Slower than in-clinic, but the final results are equally good and the trays make future touch-ups effortless — a single evening every 6–12 months keeps you bright indefinitely. Many patients combine both: one in-clinic session to jumpstart, plus take-home trays for maintenance.
If a single tooth has darkened after a root canal or trauma, external whitening will not fix it. Internal bleaching places a whitening gel inside the tooth for a few days and can restore the shade beautifully without cutting the tooth.
This is often the least invasive fix for that one darker front tooth in an otherwise bright smile.
Charcoal pastes: highly abrasive, wear down enamel over months and can permanently darken teeth by exposing yellow dentine underneath.
Lemon + baking soda scrubs: acid damage, permanent enamel loss, long-lasting sensitivity.
Cheap online LED kits: unregulated gel strength, one-size-fits-nobody trays, no gum protection — a recipe for chemical burns and gum recession.
Whitening toothpastes: they remove surface stains only. They cannot change the underlying shade of a tooth, and many are abrasive over time.
Oil pulling: pleasant, harmless, but no meaningful whitening effect in controlled studies.
The first 48 hours after whitening are the most important — enamel pores are temporarily open and stain-prone. Avoid deeply pigmented foods and drinks (chai, coffee, wine, turmeric-heavy curries, beetroot, berries) for two full days.
Long term, use a straw for tea and coffee where possible, rinse your mouth after paan or wine, brush with a low-abrasion whitening toothpaste, and do a yearly top-up (in-clinic or with your take-home trays). Most patients keep a bright smile for many years with this simple maintenance.
Whitening only works on natural tooth structure — it will not lighten crowns, veneers, composite fillings or bonded restorations. If your front teeth have visible fillings, those may need replacement after whitening so the shades match.
Very severe intrinsic stains, chipped teeth or misshapen front teeth are often better served by ceramic veneers or bonding — a full smile assessment tells you what will give the best result for your budget.
Marketing photos often show unrealistic Hollywood-white results. Natural, healthy teeth have a slight warmth — a very cool, chalky-white shade actually looks artificial next to the whites of your eyes and your skin tone.
Our goal is to lighten your teeth to the brightest shade that still looks natural on you. For most patients this is a 4–6 shade improvement on standard dental shade guides — dramatic in photos, believable in person.
Before your session, we take a shade record with a digital shade guide so your progress is measured, not guessed.
Key takeaway
Skip the internet hacks. Book a safe, in-clinic whitening session at Kolkata Smiles and walk out with a brighter smile the same day.
Yes. Dentist-supervised whitening at recommended concentrations does not damage enamel. Long-term studies confirm this.
Mild sensitivity for 24–48 hours is common and temporary. We use desensitising gels to minimise it.
It works excellently on yellow stains from food and ageing. Grey stains from tetracycline or trauma respond less predictably — veneers may be a better option.
A full session once every 12–18 months, with short touch-ups in between if needed, is safe for the long term.
We defer elective whitening during pregnancy and breastfeeding, purely as a precaution — there is no evidence of harm, but there is also no need to rush.
